They have been in SPAIN 1936 the Spanish Civil War & are exhausted and depressed ... another War will come & many are certain ... War 2  1939-1945 :  my father and family have had to go to Spain on a rescue urgently the morning of the arrival of Andre and Josette ... I am told by our hostess Clacton not to say that we have many airplanes for our Grote Homes for orphans ... “or he will go back and get them and begin the war again ... and everybody knows it is lost ... but a statement has been made ... as my grandmother Mary Gordon says to him her exact words “ ... fools make War but because what you have told me I will agree to agree a statement had to be made ...” and she bought him a lovely well made jacket at the Co-op because he only had the clothes he had travelled in ... In London the Catholic Mission 50 Lancaster Gate Square he still had the jacket 1957 and it fitted him ... and tiny notebooks with the holiday days written in his tiny writing ...

The holiday Summer 1937 is full of happy things ... the electric lights going out a rainy night on Clacton Pier and he amusing everyone by pulling down the STARS ... his English is perfect ... his mother had him reading the big boys books of adventure from his 10^th -11^th years on :   wonderful KINGSTON, Balentyne, Marryat, even Conrad in English ... I have copies of these books and will later read them ... now 1937 I am 4 years and a half and full of Greek tales and when we go for his early morning newspapers I call him saying  “ ... here comes Rosy Fingered Dawn she is putting on her robe of Grey ... we must go down to the seas edges ... ”  and then there is `The Surge and Thunder of the Odyssey...` My very young British Army father `Young Fred` born 1911 teaches I and his very young brother born 1921 LIR flyer superior at 15 years of age all the knowledge of the Globe since before the Neolithic :   I always ask my distant cousins about the food our families cooked and what did they wear as the wedding dress ... ?

 

 Memory passing years ~ he Georges-ANDRE Malraux b 1901 November seems to know all this too ... but he doth not know Greenland and Tierra del Fuego as I do, and I have cousins both Poles ... but I am not to say too much or he might go in search of our hundreds of little airplanes ... we fly over water always with 3 airplanes – one for we passengers up to 8, petrol & stores plane, rescue plane and we can fill in the air on the way to West Greenland ...

FOOD January 1939 baked fishes from the North Sea OCEANUS GERMANICUS, Swedes which I love with  some soured cream , potatoes baked or mashed, onion soup, celery, carrots and early parsnips ... breads of white, brown and beige, EGGIES and porridge and cornflakes  ...  to drink homemade lemonade, half milk with a dash of tea ... dolly-mixtures from Woolworths ... but keep them hidden from SHEshe and the roaring 20s GANGS of Nobles because they put a white powder in the paper bag and shake it up ... You will see silver-white streaks in your head ... then drink water and spit-spit-spit ... LEARN a LESSON ...

ALL KEEP CALM ... China tea and Portugal small delicate glass SHERRY ... READERS would have loved that house 112 Vista Road ... and here will sit the tragic widow of Jo June 1945 and I speak to him on great literature of the past centuries ... but he is immersed in COMICS ... big boys comics, and FILM FUN ... but I will educate him as SUMMER 1937 when I said “ I will be your mother ...”

1954 January  ... and he Georges-ANDRE MALRAUX b November 3 1901 never forgot this ... when  we sit JANUARY 1954 in SALISBURY CATHEDRAL early morning and the Verger says he will light the tall iron stoves and in an hour it will be snug and warm ... HERE ARE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE and real life for the READER ... real people and their lives ... I think NOW this is legal money from his 900 years of EAST ANGLIA ancestors ... I do not know until 1987 that they trail along the SEAS SHORES up to MANCHESTER and Liverpool ... and he is MISSING and I must not go back but try go forward ... Education JAPAN - Oh because we hath ROYAL LINE of OKINAWA ... 1504 marriage `Lady Japan in BRUGES Cathedral – her wedding gown is apricot, pink, and like the setting sun ...  1942 -  Bulford Wiltshire – Clacton-on-Sea

 

 Since 1940 October we are in a nice house with central heating and had a Christmas with other wives & children of the soldiers ... these houses are much better than the few Officers and high ranks families houses ... hot water and sensible kitchens and then a big room for eating and listening to wireless and daytime cot & small child pen ... a book case, nice table and chairs and easy chairs ... I have a pink pearl wool jumper knitted for me by a grandma lady and SHEshe had to buy  me a grey skirt – I am growing like a weed :  My brother John Gordon and 3 years old Colin are here :  Oh well all these soldiers wives and evacuated London families tell me we 3 are going to Mary Gordon granny ... we will travel by train with a lady of WRVS and a Policeman ... trouble came from Jimmie Jong James now calling himself a Major this and that from Buckingham Palace ... they hope he can be locked up in a Nut House ... got him arrested a few weeks ago ... he tried hit me with  spade ... 8 soldiers in lorry caught him and put him in JUG ... he was 6 weeks in Army Prison ... thank you dear 8 soldiers : 

 

Then ... my mother went into Prison again as she has gone mad again – that was 26^th Dec. but she was allowed Xmas day with all of us ... Jim and she are `roaring 20s` but have known one another Racing School from 1913 – he & Scots nobles were after the GORDON family 8 pieces of Scots lands and a Peninsula in  New Zealand and a big beautiful house ... I am told by an aunt and uncle how my grandpa Gordon 1930 told the nasty duke of Richmond-Lennox-Gordon to EXIT WORM ... get means off my shield and insignia ...

Grandpa Gordon is dead March 1937 and cousin of my Grandpa Frobisher Ransom Violet Lindsay-artist in December (both poisoned)  – 1942 JANUARY - Granny Mary Helena Murphy Carroll O`Brien O`Grady WILLIAMS Gordon will meet us at Clacton railway station and we will be safe ... not to worry just look after tiny Colin on the journey which is going to take all day they say ...

Granny at Clacton Railway station 6.30 and put us in a taxi to go to a Walton Road house – not `Crail` - dirty trick played on her by JIMMIE `little piece of vermin` and he burned all her photo albums and letters – 2 days late John G. and me go to school of Captain Commadore LEAROY RN musician who had a pupil called Ernest Dove -  HMV record of him `Oh for the Wings of a Dove` famous – and `Mr Learoy also one of the founders of Cecil Sharp Folklore Society ...

1945 January – I am and growing very tall - 11 years  12  in March 11 born CAMULODUNUM – Colchester -  We at 112 Vista Road the beautiful Edwardian modern Pearly House, Great kitchen, pretty garden, 4 bedrooms and windows let in lots of light and modern bathroom - Party at Charles and Jean Magowan for their children and friends – Sheshe tried stop me going and wanted to dry my hair off in curls with paraffin – Luckily  Mr young  Charles Magowan came in car for me –I shivering and weeping and fearful as she looking DAFT like SCOTLAND EARLS on DOPE – Mrs Magowan hearing he whisper things about SHEshe mad again,  put me in warm bath and washed my hair, brought nice clothes – 3 grand pianos and Mr Magowan and friends playing them Poulenc and others ... food on party plates of nice things and I given big cup of warm cocoa ... and I find best manners and am brave ...

He says `I am a widower` ... he is divorcing Clara m 1920 she on heroin all the time & she knows from 1915 Jimmie Jong the half Chinese Scot ... good Chinese family but he mad from Scots Earls who grow a dangerous dope that has them turn into animals ... Nasty matters ... Clara on heroin says Professor Winnclemann from age 12 her big brother an Andre Goldsmidt tried get her help in sanatorium but he died ... Colonel Andre – Georges -  and me go to look for my father at `the Pearly House` but empty – he climbs into garden and walks about,  peers in windows ... returns saying  “ ... all is as quiet as the grave ...”  I return to Clacton Convent – he teaches us some French – class say “ he is so beautiful ... Nuns say “God`s gift to young women”  Nobody learns any French ... we tell him we do not like the chopping off of heads still going on in France ... he says he will talk about this barbarism then to General de Gaulle ... he had been sometimes these last years in the Suffolk house ... Prof. Winncklemann insists Andre take a monthly grant pocket money from he and his wife BECAUSE he has known him since a teenager ... Andre has a rented house Paris for his sister-in-law her son and his 2 tiny sons of  the dead Josette ... the sister-in-law has spent all the money in his French bank doing up this house which is only rented ... old acquaintances of Clara pre-war party there ... MI5 like Andre lad and call this place `the Jan Steen Tavern` and are upset ... they give the boys COVER putting young agents about them who are `in training` :   Miss Win ex-ATS has a copy this Will in the bank but snaps at me – nothing to do with me but with Andre and the General ... she has a bastard nephew called Edward (duCann) who will be ejected from the Marital Court 1946 September ... he tells lies ... I do not know he is a 1924 bastard of Sheshe ... he is on heroin – he knows the GROTE children worldwide are killed all the Wartime ... It is he keeps his mother sheshe out of the Asylum where the Court and others say 10 years while we children go on with our education ... Miss Win may be threatened by him ... his father is a drug-grower with others in SCOTLAND ... They have been trying to grow drugs on the Irish cousins lands ... failed ... there are Debrett titles here ... I know Uncle Sir Edmond John O`Brien ... he called Annie and Bessie 1944 ...

Esther calls Andre `Andre dear` as so many ladies of all ages do ...

The house Walton Road CLACTON , mid 19^th century , once a view of the new RAILWAYs these long houses with garden built for Railway workers train drivers who would raise families and use gardens to grow vegetables, fruit trees, and have babes and small children safe as they grew up ... the SEAS EDGES down the road had safe shell fishes and fishing permissible from new CLACTON PIER and small row boats hired or owned with friends ...
