This spread comes cooked and warm from our 19th century Range and a tiny Oven of 1760 made in Birmingham the first iron range ...for this tiny house at the front was once a great old farmhouse and Dames School attached ... when I meet Uncle Walter Benjamin in Paris he will say that what I like is called technology and he is writing something when he has time about the Paris Arcades and technology ... (It nearly got all lost in the coming War 2 ! it is a nice bedtime book for 20 minutes )
It will be repeated in the weeks ahead here but not in its entire spread but every dish will be repeated in happier company ... Some in the Ovens in this Great Kitchen ... Looked forward to when we come back from the Seafront especially when we have gone to see the wild Holland-Clacton-Jaywick Seas on a stormy night with fleeting cloud and sudden deep sapphire skies heavy with STARS ... which we know and I already at The Quaker School (across the Old Road) know are OTHER WORLDS for the good and kind human beings to one day soon EXPLORE ... and they do before this 20th century ends ...
From October 1935 into half of 1936 I will see skies from Poles Nord to Sub & our Weddell Sea of Jean`s grandpa – and the British Royal Navy & Uncle Captain Mainwarring and great-Uncle Rear Admiral Alfred Charles Ransom are going to make some Scientific WORK there and are arranging for my grandmother JEAN choreographer ballet dancer to DANCE ON HER GRAND-FATHER James Quaker HIS WEDDELL SEA for perhaps 2 minutes and it will be filmed and safe forever – I eat on Sundays at `Jerusalem` Park Road DEPTFORD with his mother`s Silver tableware the PIECE Quaker families ...
And we are visiting all in between 1935-1936 for Aunt Margareth widow of TIGGY Grote the Real HOMES for world Orphans educating them into their 20 years in everything that is known down the centuries and all religions and languages & sciences and music (it is possible TIGGY and EDWARD LEAR and our GROTE Brokers USA thought this CURRICULUM up in 1861-1864 and encircled the Globe on our Ransom seashores by 1870s ... We have from a marriage 1883 of brother of Margareth Mrs Tiggy Grote founders of the GROTE HOMES worldwide (he widower of Sylvia Henshaw Montreal educationalist) JOHN RANSOM educationalist & Millicent she scholar ice skater & Greek arts dance & chariot processions, collected powerful Earls of Scotland who the week after the wedding demand all monies & lands are automatically become properties of the Head of the Clan he HIMSELF !

From my first years I enjoy knowing what these descending down the centuries GRANDMA`s wore for their weddings and what they put on the trestles and tables to eat ? ... how did they cook ... and here and there amongst these vast cousins we have (all still at Sea in some manner and I get Christmas and Birthday presents) the actual plates and bowls and `eating irons` & chop sticks exist as heirlooms and I know of and see two wedding frocks = one of silver moonlight of Venice 16th century, and Aunt Margareth `my girl of the snows` her Spanish wedding frock of Scarlet silks because her Father `old Fred R` wanted to see a bride in Scarlet against the West GREENLAND snows ...
Maidens and school Girls of all centuries should be able to go to the Kitchen and supervise if people are unwell, and help and make bon-bons and soups and cakes and salads I have heard – CAKES WHEN SUDDENLY VISITORS APPEAR ... : SUMMER 1937 hence at CLACTON I am able to make for Josette a young Lady writer and Georges-Andre Malraux our 2 months of summer holiday 1937 delicious afternoon Fairy Cakes to have with our China Tea ... but ask him to put them in the oven as young cooks must not take risks I have been instructed ... he likes cakes ...
& so that Jo and I do not have to `put our aprons on every afternoon` of this Holiday he says he will sometimes provide the cakes ... although we continue to make soup and some suppers & Unity`s mother an Australian artist sets the breakfast ... but he and I who go with Homer`s ` ROSY FINGERED DAWN in her cloak of GREY` to fetch the early newspapers come on the train from London, are provided with a breakfast list to buy fresh eggs, herrings or kippers in the little town and bring back by 8.am ... we are known to rise at
4 am ...JOSETTE young lady a writer is left to sleep !

He Georges-Andre dear, as his mother and Aunt Marie called him (Young MAN of LETTERS name ANDRE MALRAUX on early books) has taken to skipping over to The Co-op Store CLACTON town and buying bags of assorted cakes ... and he likes chatting to everyone in the town and is so happy and not at all nervous after the first 2 weeks : and his mother has a blood line of 900 years beginning FAMILY HISTON ( HISTON ... see little river on old maps) Lincolnshire to Suffolk and he knows many of them as she did ... she was given a `dowry house` at Saxmundham Hall Suffolk ... the Family cousins hoped she might marry back in when she was 12 years old and visiting with her mother and sister ...
(NB: in China Asia in the 19th century the Methodists taught the Chinese to make all the cakes in the Victorian and Edwardian cookery books ... I was surprised to find shop windows full of familiar CAKES from my childhood in 1986 and 1988 our tour for BMNH FISHES department along Seas Edges the whole of China where the Universities and Colleges are, many founded by Methodists for the Sciences ...)

the Dames School House that was attached to an old Farm House – 1870s a small Victorian front built and becomes 2 houses but with long gardens – my Father intends make it a Town Museum when we take another house we like, perhaps Holland-on-Sea seafront ... all our family like preserving historic areas to keep communities with their roots ...
MENU chosen by my father, help from 2 Quaker girls 16-17 my baby-sitters whose parents sang at THE POOR MAN`s OPERA, GLASTONBURY created by eminent Church composter Rutland Boughton 1914-1926 ... performers sang and played for free where they could & others including a very young PAUL ROBSON began & would be funded ... Closed 1926 when Composer Boughton was accused of encouraging socialism ... but his Opera the Immortal Hour played in London for over a year ...

· 1930s sees advancement in airplanes & beginning of RADA, and Railway travel, small cars, but too little in Medicine & its necessary Research – advances in control of malnutrition and disease often coming from 19th century by Doctors working about the vast British Empire ... the biggest EMPIRE in the Globe and like the ROMAN Empire it has become too big & too plundering of its lands, education neglected often as in the other Empires of Belgium, France, Scandinavia, Netherlands, America are all competing ... WIRELESS-radio !

· (A young Frenchman born 1901 November 3, raised gently by three women, mother Bertha & sister Marie and Grandmother Adrianna-Adrienne and speaking perfect ENGLISH language from age 12 years (grandparents had an impressive house in ITALY 19th century seen by me GR 1968 (work www `HARWELL The Pillar House to POMPEII and back` with 3 children) has gone to Asia with his German wife early1920s and returns 1924 (after meeting my mother to be Teresa E. · HE ANDRE MALRAUX has his name on several books, is worried deeply about EMPIRES and writes a book “MAN`s FATE” published in 1933 USA and FRANCE “la CONDITIONE HUMAINE” ... His mother and close family have an English blood line they know and visit and it is with full histories of its 900 years beginning Sea Traders and small farmers along the SEAS EDGES from LINCOLNSHIRE to SUFFOLK ... some 3 centuries at Kings LYNN where they become `well-to-do` ... 1920s they are spread to Somerset Manchester and Liverpool ... I hear more 1987 ...
1935 CLACTON, LONDON, abroad, I am hearing older folk after Sunday Church talk of Titanic sinking as `an act of God a warning against too much luxury put first ... most families cook Sunday dinner-lunch & plan the week days ahead & relax from work on Sunday-Sontag-la Domenica- and may even keep cheerful about Scandinavian names of days = Sunday=Valhalla a quiet murmur as they remember their raising a glass of PORT or sherry after traditional Sunday midday dinner ... a SAGO dish with big spoon of gooseberry jam to dish to every helping ...
An open APPLE tart ... small jugs of cream ...
Local Beers, ales = WINES golden or deep red ...
Teas Indian or of China = good fresh ground Coffee bought that afternoon ...
Some preserved fruits ... and perhaps Ginger preserved in syrup, semi-sweet biscuits ...
